Jared Davis is a Staff Governor, representing clinical members of staff.
I was born, grew up and completed my schooling in Letchworth, Hertfordshire, the world’s first Garden City.
I left school aged 16 and joined a local drug company to work in their laboratory, analysing raw materials and finished medicinal products. After two years, I left to join a major multinational drug manufacturer, working on new medications in their Pharmaceutical Development department.
By accident, whilst helping out a friend, I found myself working part time in a nightclub alongside my 'normal' job. After a short period, I was offered the position of Assistant Manager of the nightclub. The role of General Manager fell into place 4 months later. I found myself with a whole new set of skills to learn, many challenges and a team of 30 staff. As with any giant leap, I was not sure whether I would be able to master the managerial skills required, man management, financial accountability and legal obligations. My doubts and fears were overcome.
After spending 36 years in the hospitality business and sitting on several national committees for Whitbread and Greene King, I decided to undertake a degree in Psychology & Health at Roehampton University. I then joined London South Bank University to study Mental Health nursing.
I qualified as a registered Mental Health nurse in 2015 after achieving the NELFT Graduate of the Year Award. I started work as a staff nurse at Basildon Mental Health Assessment Unit (MHAU) where I was able to progress to Ward Manager, my current position within the Trust. Basildon MHAU is a very busy ward, quite fast paced, and to some, appears a little chaotic at times. I am supported by a fantastic team, from top to bottom!
