Bariatric and Obesity Services

The Luton and Dunstable Hospital has a Specialist Centre for Obesity Services and Research. The team provides Weight Management programmes and Bariatric Surgery to patients throughout the East of England. The EPUT Clinical Health Psychology Service contributes the psychological assessment and intervention within this service.

Weight Management Programme

Following a referral from a GP, the patient will meet our team. The individual will then be assessed by the team who will devise a 6-12 month programme individually tailored to their  needs.

Our team of specialists includes Consultant Surgeons, Consultant Physicians, Dieticians, Clinical Psychologists, Endocrinologists and Specialist Nurses.

The programme provides:

  • Nutritional guidance
  • Dietary counselling
  • Psychological assessment and support
  • In-depth medical assessment
  • Regular specialist support

Bariatric Surgery

After successfully completing a weight management programme (either at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital or through another provider) the patient will be assessed by the multidisciplinary team and will be considered for bariatric surgery.

Types of Surgery Available:

  • Roux-en-y / Gastric Bypass
  • Sleeve Gastrectomy
  • Laparascopic Gastric Banding
  • Duodenal Switch

The decision regarding which type of surgery is appropriate is made jointly by the patient and the team. It will be informed by the patient’s individual needs and clinical circumstances.

We offer a fully comprehensive after care service. After surgery the patient will continue to see our specialist team for on-going progress and support. In addition the patient will have access to our emergency bariatric team.
