Bedfordshire Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Diabetes Services
The EPUT team provides psychological support to patients referred to the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Diabetes Service when psychological problems are having a direct effect on the long-term management of their condition. These difficulties might include specific phobias or anxieties; chronic denial of their condition; difficulties with self-regulation or self-care; depression. Left untreated, such difficulties have been known to result in long-term poor control over health conditions which increases the risk of associated complications developing in future.
Patients receive an assessment, in order to develop a shared understanding of their difficulties and, where appropriate, individual sessions of psychological therapy are offered to enable them to develop skills to manage it better.
