Cancer and Palliative Care Psychology Service – Hertfordshire

The EPUT team provides psychological support to patients and carers in Hertfordshire  who have have experienced significant psychological distress related to their experience of cancer or other end of life illnesses, which has negatively impacted their ability to cope effectively with diagnosis, treatment, side-effects, prognosis, return to pre-illness activities and roles or with terminal illness or caring roles and responsibilities.

The Macmillan Clinical Psychology Service is available to Cancer & Palliative Care patients over 18 years of age, living in East & North Hertfordshire and delivers a high quality, accessible and equitable psychological service to Cancer, Palliative and End of Life Care patients and their families.

Patients will have a complex psychological needs relating to any aspect of the diagnosis or treatment of cancer or other progressive diseases in the palliative phase.

The areas covered by the EPUT Clinical Psychology service are Oncology Acute Services for East & North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, and Palliative Care across Community, Hospices and Acute settings in East & North Hertfordshire NHS Trust.

The service comprises of one full-time Consultant Clinical Psychologist.

In the Community, the Clinical Psychology Service provides a service to the community alongside the Macmillan nurses in North Hertfordshire.  The community in East Hertfordshire is served alongside the Isabel Hospice, which includes both community nurses and inpatient hospice beds.  The psychology service may also work alongside Garden House Hospice, which has inpatient and community provision.

There are 2 Hospitals in the area, which form part of the Mount Vernon Cancer Network; these are the Lister Hospital, Stevenage and The QE2, Welwyn Garden City.


Your Clinical Psychologist may work with you to:

  • Help you to identify your strengths to find solutions to cope with current difficulties.
  • Spot unhelpful patterns of behaviour in yourself, or in your relations with other people, and learn skills to address these.
  • Help to recognise and challenge upsetting thoughts that may be affecting your life.
  • Use relaxation and breathing exercises to reduce anxiety.
  • Explore problem-solving strategies and other ways of coping.
