Family Nurse Partnership
Overview of Service
If you are under 20 expecting your first baby, a family nurse can visit you to help you have a healthy pregnancy and enjoy being the best mum you can. Your specially trained family nurse will help you understand all about your pregnancy and how to well care for yourself and your baby. Your nurse will visit you regularly during your pregnancy and then after the birth for up to 2 years.
You and your family nurse will decide together what you will cover in each visit.
Your nurse will share lots of information with you about pregnancy, giving birth and looking after babies and toddlers, helping you prepare well and deciding what is right for you and your family.
Your nurse will help you plan for your future. You can talk about childcare, education, training and gaining new skills as well working, housing and finances. Together you can discuss what you want and how to make it happen.
You are the most important person in your baby’s life and this programme can help you be the best parent you can.
The aim of the Family Nurse Partnership is to:
- Improve antenatal health
- Improve child health and development
- Improve economic self-sufficiency
The programme covers the six domains of personal health, environmental health, life course development, maternal role, family and friends and health and human services. The family nurses use programme guidelines, materials and practical activities, to work with mums as well as dads and wider family, on understanding their baby, making changes to their behaviour, developing emotionally and building positive relationships. The in-depth relationship the family nurses develop with their clients and their therapeutic communication skills enable them to connect with the motivations and ‘hearts desires’ that all first time parents have. In this way, they can guide their clients safely through what is often a difficult life transition to becoming the parent they want to be for their new baby.
