Neuro-Rehabilitation Service

The Neuro-Rehabilitation Psychology Service provide neuro-rehabilitation for people following a stroke or other neurological conditions. The team aim to maximise quality of life through supporting people and families to have a clear understanding of their condition and develop effective strategies to manage changes experienced.

Treatment

The team focus on enabling individuals and families or carers to increase a sense of confidence in managing emotional distress, uncertainty and changes in thinking skills. Where strategies may not be implemented by the person affected, appropriate changes in the environment are identified.

Where appropriate, assessments of thinking skills (cognitive assessment) can be completed to identify effective rehabilitation strategies in people with more complex needs. For people returning to work, comprehensive cognitive assessment can be provided to identify the support that may be required with demanding and complex roles.

It is recognised that for many people the effects of stroke are experienced beyond six weeks and other neurological conditions are often chronic. For people requiring further support to manage emotional and cognitive changes, plans are developed with the person and their families to address these needs including sign-posting to relevant services.

The team provides up to six weeks of neuro-rehabilitation. Therapeutic input can be provided at home as part of the early supported discharge service supporting people who are able to make the transition home from hospital within six weeks.
