New psychiatrists join Colchester and Tendring mental health teams

Two new Consultant Psychiatrists have recently joined our mental health teams in Colchester and Tendring.

Dr Shafy Muthalif has worked in the NHS for a number of years and has vast experience of community adult psychiatry. He specialises in eating disorders and complex trauma.

Dr Muthalif has joined the Specialist Community Mental Health Team based at Reunion House in Clacton and is also the Trust’s Medical Examiner for north east Essex.

He said: “It needs a special person to understand complexities of suffering caused by mental illness and I am here to provide that expertise and to initiate the cultural change if needed to create a foundation for that.”

Dr Hooria Ahmad is a locum Consultant Psychiatrist and has joined the Colchester Specialist Community Mental Health Team at Herrick House, Colchester.

Dr Ahmad is a former psychiatry trainee in Essex who has a strong understanding of local health care and recently spent time working in Pakistan.

She said: “The best part of my work is our team working together. We work hard and but also laugh together.”

In her spare time, Dr Ahmad enjoys badminton and going to the gym. She is also involved in the Street Kids Education Initiative, which works with Ran’aa Child Welfare Foundation in Peshawar, Pakistan.

Consultant Psychiatrists play a vital role in our mental health services. They assess patients’ mental health, diagnose mental health conditions, develop treatment plans and provide therapies and counselling services to help patients better manage their mental health.

Our Specialist Community Mental Health teams in Colchester and Tendring offer assessment and treatment for people who have a serious mental health illness. Staff are from multiple disciplines and include mental health nurses, occupational therapists, social workers, support workers and psychiatrists.

The teams are part of the North East Essex Health and Wellbeing Alliance, a group of organisations and services that work together to improve health and wellbeing of people living in the local community.
