What our staff and apprentices have to say on their apprenticeships

Recently qualified occupational therapists through an EPUT degree apprenticeship:

Chris Jackson, Occupational Therapist

“When I started my apprenticeship, I had been working as an Occupational Therapy Assistant for around 18 months.

“The course has allowed me to learn more about the theory underpinning the work I had been doing. And it has given me a broader and deeper understanding of the role of Occupational Therapy in a variety settings.

“The apprenticeship has supported me to develop leadership and quality improvement skills, and build a network of professions within and beyond the Trust. It has helped me become more confident in the decisions I make at work, and it has helped me develop my own personal style of working with service users.

“This pathway is something that should be on the radar of any support staff looking to broaden their horizons!”

Rachel Soetan, Occupational Therapist

“Degree apprenticeships require commitment and hard work. Working and learning at the same time, coupled with family commitments, can be challenging.

“When I signed up, I thought: “It shouldn’t be that hard – it’s simply ‘learning on the job’!” And while it is, it’s also far more than that. It has required giving up lots of ‘me time’.

“Having said that, everyone has their own way of learning: you just need to find your own learning techniques.

“To anyone thinking of taking on this route for completing their degree: you will not regret it. I am so happy and proud to have done it!”

Sharon Bell, Occupational Therapist

“My apprenticeship has been a rollercoaster ride with high points, dips, and twists and turns along the way.

“It has all been so worth it. I waited for so long for an opportunity to train in occupational therapy, and the apprenticeship route sounded like the perfect way to learn.

“It’s 80% learning on the job and 20% academic study – and the academic side is full on.

“My advice would be to ensure you are able to balance your work, life and study time for three years. However, let me reiterate: it is so worth it!

“I have expanded my knowledge, developed as a practitioner, and increased my confidence.

“I have met professionals from a variety of disciplines, worked in different services and networked, all of which will support my ongoing career development.”

Tracy Magowan, Occupational Therapy Apprentice

"I work in an older adult acute psychiatric ward and I love my job.

“The apprenticeship is well structured, challenging yet rewarding. I have learnt so much about the role.

“I am very much enjoying my time as an apprentice and am excited to see where the journey takes me."

Pamela Stevens, Occupational Therapy Apprentice

"Being an apprentice isn't just about studying and earning a qualification, it is also about making a difference.

“The skills and experience I have gained wouldn't have been possible from just sitting in a classroom."

Tracey Crick, Level 5 Assistant Practitioner Apprentice

"Being on the apprenticeship course has brought my dream of becoming a mental health nurse that one step closer.

“With the support of the apprentices and the team who deliver the course, I am enjoying the challenge."

Hayley Stevens, Level 5 Assistant Practitioner Apprentice

"The apprenticeship programme has allowed me to progress in my professional development in a way I never thought possible.

“The tutors have been supportive and informative in guiding me through the various courses progressing my knowledge, skills and behaviours whilst improving my working practice to provide holistic person centered care to my patients."
