This pathway focuses on developing the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required for a successful transition to the next step of your career. We look for very special people, and you may be the best fit. Are you:

  • Registered Mental Nurse (RMN) with current NMC registration and at least one year of post-qualification experience in a clinical setting or alternatively
  • Hold an Occupational Therapist registration with the HPC or have a Psychology or Social worker background?
  • Do you possess a strong foundation in mental health principles and a fervent desire to support individuals in crisis?
  • Do you thrive in a fast-paced environment and are adept at building rapport and communicating effectively over the phone?

Your growth, our commitment

This plan is designed to be achievable within 12 months. The specific timeframe may vary depending on individual learning styles and opportunities available. What will happen during this period?

  • Month-by-month development plan: You will progress through intensive training modules, supervised practice sessions, and opportunities to mentor junior staff.
  • Expert guidance: You will benefit from regular supervision by senior clinicians and access to specialists for complex cases.
  • Supportive learning environment: You will engage with peers in a collaborative atmosphere, fostering knowledge exchange and emotional support.

Our core objectives are to help you to:

  1. Enhance clinical expertise in mental health assessment and crisis intervention.
  2. Develop leadership and supervisory skills.
  3. Strengthen communication, collaboration, and advocacy for service users.
Key aspects of the program

Mentorship and Supervision: Throughout the program, you will receive regular supervision from senior clinicians and participate in clinical development activities.

Training and Development: You will attend training sessions to enhance your expertise in areas like crisis intervention, risk assessment, and care planning. Additionally, you will be responsible for delivering training to junior colleagues.

Gradual Responsibility: You will progressively take on more responsibility, transitioning from supervised assessments to leading them independently.

Performance Assessment: Regular reviews will monitor your progress, culminating in a final assessment to determine your readiness for Band 6 responsibilities.

Peer Support Groups and Access to Specialists: Connecting with colleagues for knowledge exchange, emotional support, and sharing best practices. Consulting with senior clinicians or specialists on complex cases for guidance and additional expertise.

By successfully completing this program, you'll be well-equipped to excel as a Band 6 Mental Health Practitioner in the demanding yet rewarding field of crisis telephone support.

Programme Timeline

What you can expect from during your time in the programme

Observe and learn about the 111 CRS service to identify key competencies. Reflect on your current strengths and areas for development. Discuss with your clinical lead your career aspirations and agree on development goals and plan.

Work with the support of your clinical lead under close supervision. Join clinical face-to-face meetings to discuss challenging cases. Read current research articles and publications on mental health crisis intervention and best practices. 

Explore relevant courses and participate in workshops or webinars on specific mental health presentations or risk assessment tools. 

 

Clinical Skills:
1. We will expect you to take on more complex calls involving risk assessments, safeguarding concerns, or challenging presentations.
2. Conduct assessments and analysis of your cases and reports with senior colleagues to refine communication and intervention skills.

Leadership Skills:
1. Take on further leadership responsibilities within the 111 service.
2. Participate in leadership development programs offered by the trust.
3. Develop your coaching and mentoring skills to support colleagues.

During this period we will support you to:

  • Maintain a reflective learning log documenting your learning experiences, achievements, and areas for further development.
  • Collect evidence of your competency development, such as certificates, course completion documents and mentor feedback.
  • Build up your contribution to service improvement initiatives within the 111 service.

Once you feel confident in your abilities and we evaluate your progress, we will support your transition to Band 6 Senior Mental Health Practitioner positions within the 111 service.

The assessment will be based on your learning log and portfolio showcasing the skills and knowledge you have developed during the process and demonstrating your commitment to professional growth.
