Children's Asthma & Allergy Service (CAA)
Summary
The Asthma and Allergy Service is a community-based service providing a service to children and young people aged up to 18 years who live within and are registered with a GP in south east Essex or attend a school in the area (Southend and Castle Point and Rochford Integrated Care Board areas).
Service Information
The team works in partnership with parents, carers and health professionals in caring for children and young people with asthma and allergies. The team works in partnership with families and encourages families to become active participants in their child’s assessment and treatment.
The service provides:
- assessment
- advice
- support
- care plans
- asthma, eczema and allergies training for patients and families
- training for educational settings and childminders.
The service tailors all management to the individual, identifying what would be the best treatment approach for your child. This may include any of the following:
- A full assessment in clinic with a discussion on the cause, triggers and how to manage the illness.
- Demonstration and advice on how to use an inhaler and spacer, give medication, apply lotion or use and adrenaline auto-injector.
- A written care plan for use at home, school, pre-school or other surroundings your child or young person needs support in.
- Liaise with other professionals (Hospital Consultant, GP, health visitors, school nurses, tertiary centres, other professionals and School, pre-school).
- Refer to local paediatricians if appropriate.
The team educates and encourages the families to become active participants in their child’s assessment and treatment.
The service has an administrator based at Rayleigh Clinic. Community clinics are run from various different locations across South East Essex.

Referral Information
How to access this service
Please ask for a referral from one of the following:
- education (pre-school and school)
- health professional (GP, hospital consultant, health visitor or school nurse)
When we accept a referral we will provide a clinic appointment to support a child and their family with their condition. We will discuss with you the most appropriate treatment approach.
Asthma Friendly Schools Programme
In addition, the team are supporting schools in the locality to mid and south Essex to achieve Asthma Friendly Schools accreditation.
Schools need to meet 5 standards to achieve the accreditation.

Schools need an Asthma Policy and an Asthma Champion in place for children with asthma |

Schools need an Asthma Register noting the details of all children with asthma |
Standard 3 |
Schools need Emergency asthma kits and Procedures detailing how and when to use them |
Standard 4 |
Schools need Individual Health Care Plan (IHCP) for each child/young person with asthma and need to Record use of students medications, Students who self-Manage, Storage of Inhalers/spacers |
Standard 5 |
Schools need 85% of staff to have completed Asthma Friendly School Training |
