Dreaming of a Green Christmas (1)

A poster and short story competition for schools in the Castle Point and Rochford catchment area asking children how they would celebrate a ‘Green Christmas’ received a huge number of entries.

The competition, organised by the Castle Point and Rochford Sustainable Development and Carbon Management Task and Finish Group (comprising Castle Point and Rochford Clinical Commissioning Group, SEPT, Castle Point Borough Council, Rochford District Council, Essex County Council and Castlepoint Association of Voluntary Services) asked pupils up to and including Primary 3 to create a poster illustrating their ‘Green Christmas’ and Primaries 4 to 6 to write a short story (up to 100 words) or poem about how they will celebrate a ‘Green Christmas’.

We’re pleased to announce the winners of the competition were:

Rosie Morrell from Thundersley Primary School - Indigo Class for her poster and  Aidan Cook from Great Wakering Primary School - Pine Class for his story.

Both Rosie and Aidan received four tickets to the pantomime at Southend’s Cliffs Pavilion.

Every school that participated in the competition was presented with a Christmas tree for planting in their school grounds.

Dr. Dawn Hillier, SEPT Non Executive Director and Chair of the Castle Point and Rochford Sustainable Development and Carbon Management Task and Finish Group, said: “We were delighted that the Mayor of Castle Point Borough Council, Cllr Maryse Iles, and Chair of Rochford Council, Mrs Barbara Wilkins, took time out of their busy schedules to not only judge all the entries, but also present the winners with their prizes. It was a struggle to choose the winners as the standard of the entries was of such high calibre. We were so pleased at the number of pupils who really explored all the aspects of ‘green’ issues and how they can be used to make Christmas more carbon friendly.”
