Learn more about how to manage your diabetes

Two of our specialist teams in west Essex offer education programmes to help people living with diabetes to manage their condition.

Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation’s West Essex Community Specialist Diabetes Service and West Essex Community Dietitians deliver two structured education programmes, which we are highlighting this Diabetes Week (10 to 16 June).

DAFNE (Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating)

This is for people with type 1 and teaches people how to count the carbohydrates they eat and take the right amount of insulin to maintain healthy blood glucose levels.

It also covers other aspects of living with type 1, such as exercise, illness and hypoglycaemia. The aim of DAFNE is to help people lead as normal a life as possible and reduce the risk of long term complications.

This film explains more about the programme.

The course is delivered by the West Essex Community Specialist Diabetes Service.

There are two online courses later this year on:

  • 4 September to 9 October (Wednesdays at 10am to 1pm)
  • 30 October to 4 December (Wednesdays at 9am to 12pm).

A refresher course for people who have previously completed DAFNE will be held on Wednesday 11 September (10am to 11am) and Wednesday 16 October (10am to 1pm).

These courses are available to patients who are aged over 17, registered with a GP in west Essex, and have been diagnosed with type 1 for at least six months.

This structured education course aims to increase their knowledge and understanding of their condition to help them make lifestyle changes to manage their health more effectively.
